The Copenhagen Wheel was initially developed at MIT’s SENSEable City Lab as a research project, sponsored by the Mayor of Copenhagen. It has won multiple design awards and been reviewed in over 1,000 media publications, including BBC, Wired and the New York Times – not to mention a glamourous acting debut during a whole season of TV series Weeds. Most importantly, Superpedestrian has been receiving daily requests for pre-orders – over 14,000 messages to date.
In December 2012, Superpedestrian acquired an exclusive license from MIT for the Copenhagen Wheel’s patents, bringing the project from the research environment to the hands (and feet!) of people worldwide.
The Copenhagen Wheel captures your energy when you brake and give you an automatic push when you need it. The wheel is wirelessly controlled by your smart phone. It’s always online, so you can share and receive information to empower your biking experience.
POWER ASSIST : As you pedal, the Copenhagen Wheel measures your effort and gives you a boost when you need it – an invisible riding companion. No need for throttles, just set out to bike as you normally would… but go faster, farther, and easier…
REGENERATIVE BRAKING : The wheel captures the energy dissipated when you brake or go down hill, storing it in a light – weight and high-capacity lithium battery. But you couldn’t spot a clunky hardware anywhere – energy is stored in the wheel itself, ready when you need it.
SMART CONTROL : Ride hands-free: the wheel is controlled automatically through sensors in the pedals. As you ride harder – when you’re heading uphill, for example – the wheel gives an increasing kick. Depending on your exercise goals, you can vary the level of power-assist with our app.
SDK : The Superpedestrian SDK is a platform for developers to get creative and generate a host of apps, ranging from navigation to pollution to customized wheel functionality. We can’t guarantee any high-flying stunts – but why don’t you give it a try?
SEAMLESS DESIGN : The Copenhagen Wheel is a stylish makeover for your bike. It’s completely wireless, compact and simple; all designed for your everyday commute. Twist two screws, install the wheel, download the app: turn your wheels and make heads turn.
